How to Open and Edit Obsidian Notes on iPhone and Android
Short answer: an Obsidian vault is just a folder of plain Markdown (.md) files, so you can open and edit your notes on an iPhone, iPad or Android phone with any Markdown app. Markdown Reader & Editor - MD opens the files straight from Files, iCloud Drive or your file manager, shows them rendered, and follows [[WikiLinks]] between notes, so you can check or fix a note without opening Obsidian.
Why your Obsidian notes open anywhere
Obsidian does not lock your notes in a database. Each note is a .md text file inside the vault folder, and that folder lives wherever you keep it: iCloud Drive, a synced folder, Dropbox, or local storage. Any app that reads Markdown can open them.
That is useful when you only want to read a note, copy a snippet, or fix a typo and do not need the full Obsidian app.
Open and edit a note on iPhone or iPad
- Install Markdown Reader & Editor - MD from the App Store.
- In Files, find your vault folder (iCloud Drive, or the folder your sync app uses) and tap a
.mdnote, or use Share and choose the app. - Read it rendered, with headings, tables, task lists and highlighted code blocks.
- Switch to the editor, change the text and save. The file stays a normal
.mdfile, so Obsidian sees the change next time it syncs.
Open and edit a note on Android
- Install the app from Google Play: Markdown Reader & Editor.
- Open your vault folder in the file manager, or tap Open inside the app and pick the note.
- Tap a
[[WikiLink]]to jump to the note it names, even when it sits in another folder of the vault. - Edit and save in place.
What works, and what does not
- Works: headings, lists, task lists, tables, code blocks, links between notes,
[[Name]]links, live preview while you type, find and replace, dark themes, and offline use with no account. - Not part of a Markdown viewer: Obsidian plugins, graph view, Canvas and query blocks such as Dataview. Those stay as plain text in the file. Your notes are safe, they just are not interpreted.
- Sync: the app edits the file where it lives. Keep using whatever you use to sync the vault (iCloud Drive, Syncthing, Dropbox) and edits travel with it.
When to use this instead of Obsidian mobile
Use Obsidian's own mobile app for plugins, graph and a full vault workflow. Use a lightweight Markdown app when you want a note to open instantly, when you are reading someone else's Markdown folder, or when you want to edit one file without loading a whole vault.
FAQ
Can I open an Obsidian vault on iPhone without Obsidian? Yes. The vault is a normal folder of .md files, and a Markdown app can open any of them.
Will editing a note outside Obsidian break my vault? No. The note stays plain Markdown. Obsidian picks up the change like any other edit to the file.
Do [[WikiLinks]] work? Yes, tapping a [[Name]] link opens the note with that name from the same folder tree.
Is there an Obsidian alternative for Android that opens .md files? Markdown Reader & Editor opens and edits them offline, with no account.
Is it free? The app is free to download.
